How to Heal From Narcissistic Abuse

How to Heal from Narcissism

Many people are or have been affected by narcissistic behavior. As a survivor of narcissism, I would like to focus on the children.

For those who are not quite sure how narcissism affects a child, let me give you a brief introduction. Children of narcissistic parents are not shown love and support of any kind. They are expected to be perfect so that the world views their parents as perfect. The children and everything they do reflects them. This is the parents’ mindset.

In my case, it was my mother who was the narcissist in the household. The expectations were high. I was expected to get good grades, stay out of trouble and appear perfect in every way.  I was told to be seen and not heard and look good.

Narcissist are completed wrapped up in themselves. They are only concerned with how they appear to others. These personality traits can leave lasting scars mentally and emotionally on kids.

Narcissistic people do have a sense of superiority, and they will come across as charming and will always strive to be the center of attention. Growing up with a narcissistic parent can lead to trust issues later in life.  In some cases, the child becomes a narcissist themselves.  In most cases the children grow up t be adults with relationships and marriage issues as they attract narcissistic relationship to work it all out. Crazy huh! Energy attracts like energy.

As a child of a narcissist, you must always go along with what your narcissistic parent tells you and are not permitted to have an opinion, or voice your thoughts, if you do you are scolded. This may lead to low self-esteem and struggles with trust issues later in life.

A narcissistic parent is self-absorbed, leaving children feeling not good enough and unloved. These kids grow up to be people pleasers, looking for approval from whomever they can receive it from. This unhealthy programming must be deleted and a new reality created to assist in the healing process.

In my case, as in not enough cases, I broke the chain that linked narcissist behavior to the next generation. Being aware of the unhealthy behavior is the key.  I think the first time I recognized the behavior was my mom and older sister judging other people and putting them down with nasty remarks. I did not realize that everybody did not do this until I got out into the world and observed. I think it was my first ayah moment.

There is a name for this, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, NPD.

Here is what the Mayo Clinic says about NPD; “narcissistic personality disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. Those with narcissistic personality disorder believe that they are superior to others and have little regard for other people’s feelings. But behind this mas of ultra -confidence lies a fragile self -esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism. “

One of the saddest traits of a narcissist is that they lack empathy. They do not realize how their self-centered behavior is affecting those around them.

Narcissists crave an empathic person in a relationship as they receive the attention of the empath who loves them unconditionally. Empaths are easily reeled in by narcissists as they are people pleasers. So, it’s the perfect match, at first. In the beginning everything is great until the narcissist mask slips and the true personality begins to show through.
